History Of Leading Private Jet Manufacturers

There is a big range in private aircraft manufacturers on the market today since its beginning 50+ years ago. Here are a few short biographies of where some of these companies came from.

Cessna
Headquartered in Wichita, the Cessna Aircraft Company manufactures their private aviation aircraft since 1911. A farmer in Rago, Kansas built his own aircraft and flew it as the first person to fly between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. This farmer, Clyde Cessna, then began his aircraft business in Enid, Oklahoma, initially with just wood and fabric, while he tested his early planes mostly on salt flats. Cessna then moved to Wichita when bankers in Enid stopped lending him more money to build his planes.

Bombardier
Founded in 1937, Bombardier Aerospace was started by a French Canadian by the name of Joseph-Armand Bombardier. Following Airbus and Boeing, Bombardier is currently listed as the third largest aircraft manufacturer. With its headquarters in Quebec, Bombardier is now in the market of business jets after acquiring the company Learjet in 1990.

Embraer
The Brazilian aerospace conglomerate Embraer is a manufacturer of commercial, military, executive and agricultural aircraft in São José dos Campos, São Paulo State. The company’s biggest competition in the international market is the Canadian Bombardier, whom rivals with Embraer for the title of the third-largest airplane manufacturer. Embraer’s roots began when the Brazilian government was making investments in the 1940’s and 1950’s to develop a domestic market for the aviation industry. In 1969 Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica (Embraer) was formed as a government-owned corporation.

Gulfstream
Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has its roots in the 1950’s and evolved into a business aircraft builder with its facilities in Bethpage, New York. The company started out as Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co. who were known for the production of military grade aircraft. The first private aircraft they produced was the Grumman Gulfstream I (G-I) which had a max speed of 350 mph at 25,000 feet. It seats 12 passengers and has a range of 2200 miles and at the time was the blueprint for luxurious business travel.

Beechcraft
Beechcraft Corporation is a general aviation manufacturer based in the US, with a strong presence in the military aircraft industry. Their products range from general aviation, military trainers, light-single-engine aircraft to turboprop transports that are twin-engine. Beech Aircraft Company was founded in Wichita, Kansas, in 1932 by Walter Beech and his wife Olive Ann Beech. The company began operations in an idle Cessna factory. With designer Ted Wells, they developed the first aircraft under the Beechcraft name, the classic Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing, which first flew in November 1932. Over 750 Stagger wings were built, with 2 manufactured for the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
